Robert
Llewellyn, probably best known as Kryten the android on Red Dwarf, is the
scrapmaster of the show. Not just the host of the show, Robert knows his
stuff. I mean, he actually knows the science behind the machines as opposed
to some vapid host reading it off of a cue card.Robert is the soul of the
show.
Cathy Rogers was added to the on-air talent for
the 2nd series and the American versions. She was,
however,
a producer for all of the series'. Lest you think Cathy was added to "dress
up" the show (and we're not complaining about that), she also has a masters
in health policy and studied medicine for 3 years at Oxford University.
This is one co-host who has brains and isn't just window dressing. Cathy
is now doing other projects for RDF.
For
the 1st US series, hosting duties went to comedian George Gray. George
was a capable host and I grew to like him after a couple of shows. His
style is loud, a contrast (off putting at first) to what we were used to.
He also plays it dumb at times (and goes for the joke) but from watching
him host, it's probably an act.
Sally
Grey was the host for the pilot. Having never seen the pilot myself, I
can't comment on her performance. I have been told that her hosting was
adequate. However, it bears mentioning that the casual viewer shouldn't
make judgements based on one performance. Either it wasn't "great" or she
had other engagements that prevented her from going ahead as series host
(thus she was replaced by Robert).
The
2nd through 5th American series is brought to you with a new male co-host.
Tyler Harcott hails from British Columbia, Canada. His style of hosting
is a bit closer to Robert's. We know it's unfair to make the comparison
but, we must. We call him a co-host since both he and Cathy (now Karyn)
share the same duties. It's also important to realize that he is an individual
with an equal share in the host role.
Joining
in the fun and filth for the 4th and 5th US series is Karyn Bryant. Driving
a tank was just one of the many things she did for the TBS series 'Movies
For Guys Who Like Movies' which seems appropriate for the new Mistress
of Junk, the Princess of Scrap, the...well, you get the idea...to have
done. There is no doubt that this gal is enjoying herself as she's a seamless
fit into the show. We do miss Cathy's accent though.
Lisa
Rogers is the next lady to inherit the throne of being "Robert's little
friend." Her previous work includes The Big Breakfast and Sport Relief.
Think of Lisa not as a replacement for Cathy, but as the new co-host. She's
got no fear in mucking about with the teams and can hold her own when chatting
with Robert. Oh, and a point we can't stress enough (because everyone wants
to know)...she's not related to Cathy.
Junkyard
Mega Wars...REtooled, REengineered, REborn. Two all-new hosts for the latest
incarnation of everyone's favorite junkfest. Rossi Morreale is a former
college football player for Arkansas and a tempter from Temptation Island
2. He has the attitude of an extreme-sports athlete and seems to do little
more than antagonize the teams.
Providing
some eye-candy, Bobbi Sue Luther is an enthusiastic lady who seems to stay
on the sidelines. She starts the races and talks to judge Greg Bryant during
the build day. Her previous work includes modelling and, most impressively,
Bobbi Sue is a trained firefighter. Don't let the "dumb-blonde" act fool
you...this gals has got brains!
