Mechanical Crane

In this episode of Round Two, the teams will be moving 15 items from a "pick up crate" to a "drop off crate". The crates are 18 feet apart with the team, and their crane, in a square between them. They will have 10 minutes to move as many of the items from one area to the other, scoring one point for each item. The first team to 15 points or the team with the most points after time expires advances to Round Three.

Both teams are using the same basic design. A central tower fixed to a base will help support a long arm (the boom) which will have a grabbing device on the end. This is where the designs change.

The Funky Junkers are going to make a 'dustpan' style grabber. A large, flat-bottomed pan will scoop up the items and a rake will help scoop and also hold the items in the pan. To help them lift the arm, they will attach a weight to the other end of the boom.

The Junkyard Jugglers are making a claw. One half of the claw doesn't move and the other half is operated by one of the team members. They'll lower it in and close the moveable claw to trap an item, swing it around and release it to drop it in.

Blue only finds one clock worth 5
minutes of engineer time
Red managed 2 clocks for
a total of 10 minutes

Blue has a base, mast and will use
a shopping cart wheel as a swivel
They'd be ahead of the game if they
could decide on a grabber design

Red wants to use a wooden
pallet for a base but opt for a
small steel trolley
The Reds build their dustpan
complete with a rake for pulling
things into it and a guard

Blue is done a have just enough
time for a quick test
Red is done but no time
for testing

Kamaya & Rob on location with
a massive crane
The two pick up crates the teams
will have to dig out of

Red scores first, to Clint's
delight
Blue is having some problems
but they're getting the hang of it

Blue has a small lead...
...and now it's even bigger

Red's scoop/dustpan is too big
to get at the objects in their crate
The final score of 13-6 means the
Junkyard Jugglers advance!
